ALPHARETTA, GA

Fulton County, Georgia

Living in Alpharetta, GA

Alpharetta sits along GA 400 about 26 miles north of downtown Atlanta. It calls itself the Technology City of the South, and it pairs big employers with a walkable downtown, Avalon and miles of greenway. I lived here before moving to Cumming, so I know it well.

A tech hub with a small-town center

Alpharetta built its City Center around a town green, a park and City Hall, and the streets around it are lined with restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. Park once and walk the rest of the evening. A one-mile paved path, the Alpha Loop, links downtown with Avalon.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Alpharetta grew from about 65,800 residents in 2020 to an estimated 66,900 in 2025, and Fulton County as a whole has nearly 1.1 million people. Office parks along GA 400 are home to hundreds of technology companies, which is where the “Technology City” nickname comes from.

Mailing addresses and county lines

An Alpharetta mailing address covers much more than the city itself. A home with an Alpharetta address can be inside the city, in Milton, or across the county line in southern Forsyth County, which has different schools and tax rates.

Getting around

GA 400 runs through the middle of the city and is the main route to Atlanta. The Big Creek Greenway and the Alpha Loop make it possible to walk or bike between some neighborhoods, downtown and Avalon. Test your commute with your map app’s “depart at” setting and your real work hours.

Taxes and the homestead exemption

Property taxes are set by Fulton County (including the school system), and homes inside city limits also pay City of Alpharetta taxes. Homes with an Alpharetta address in Forsyth County follow Forsyth County’s rules instead. In Georgia you have to apply for the homestead exemption: you generally need to own and live in the home on January 1, and in Fulton County the deadline is April 1. Confirm the current rules with the county.

Schools

Schools in Alpharetta, GA

Every public school zoned for homes inside Alpharetta city limits, based on Fulton County Schools’ 2026–27 attendance zones. Zone lines don’t follow city lines, so some of these schools sit in Milton, Johns Creek or Roswell. Two more are open to Alpharetta residents without a zone: Innovation Academy (by application) and Amana Academy, a K–8 public charter (by lottery), which shows under both Elementary and Middle. Homes with an Alpharetta mailing address in southern Forsyth County go to Forsyth County Schools instead. Assignments go by exact address, so two homes a few streets apart can be zoned for different schools. Always confirm with the district before you make an offer. FAQ

Common Questions About Alpharetta

What county is Alpharetta, GA in?

Fulton County. The Alpharetta mailing address also covers parts of Milton and southern Forsyth County, though, so a home with an Alpharetta address isn’t always in the city or in Fulton County.

What zip codes does Alpharetta have?

The main Alpharetta zip codes are 30004, 30005, 30009 and 30022. Some of them reach beyond the city: 30004 also covers most of Milton and part of southern Forsyth County, and 30022 also covers part of Johns Creek.

What is the population of Alpharetta, GA?

An estimated 66,921 people as of July 1, 2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, up about 1.7% since 2020.

Is Alpharetta part of Atlanta? How far is it?

Alpharetta is its own city, about 26 miles north of downtown Atlanta by GA 400 and about 35 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Drive times depend heavily on traffic and time of day, so test your commute at rush hour.

What is Alpharetta known for?

Alpharetta calls itself the Technology City of the South and is home to hundreds of technology companies. It’s also known for its walkable downtown, Avalon, the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre and the Big Creek Greenway.

Is Alpharetta walkable?

Parts of it are. Downtown and Avalon are made for walking and are linked by the one-mile Alpha Loop, and the Big Creek Greenway adds about 9 miles of paved trail. Most neighborhoods are still car-dependent, so plan on driving for everyday errands.

What should I know before moving to Alpharetta?

A few things catch newcomers off guard: an Alpharetta address may be in Milton or Forsyth County; school assignments go by exact address; you have to apply for the homestead exemption by April 1; and Fulton and Forsyth counties require emissions testing for most cars. My free Relocation Guide covers all of this in more detail.

Should I live in Alpharetta or Milton?

They sit side by side in Fulton County and share Fulton County Schools, but they feel different. Alpharetta has a walkable downtown, Avalon and many large employers. Milton next door is quiet and rural on purpose, with large lots and horse farms. The right fit depends on how much land you want and how close you like to be to shops and restaurants.

How do I look up property records and taxes in Alpharetta?

For homes in Fulton County, search any property on the Fulton County Board of Assessors site; county tax bills come from the Fulton County Tax Commissioner. Homes inside city limits also pay City of Alpharetta property taxes. For an Alpharetta-address home in Forsyth County, use Forsyth County’s qPublic property records.

Does Fulton County require emissions testing?

Yes. Fulton and Forsyth are both among the 13 metro Atlanta counties where gasoline-powered passenger vehicles need an emissions test before registration. Details are on Georgia’s Clean Air Force.

When is the Alpharetta Farmers Market?

Saturday mornings from spring through fall in downtown Alpharetta, near City Hall and the Town Green. Dates change each year, so check the market’s website.

Where can I find crime information for Alpharetta?

Use the official source: the City of Alpharetta’s Department of Public Safety, which handles police, fire and 911 for the city. You can contact them or check their reports yourself.

Answers are general information, current as of October 2026, and may contain errors. Rules, tax rates, deadlines and exemptions change, so please confirm with the official source linked in each answer.
